I recently blogged about the relationship between REST and RPC. REST and RPC also have a relationship with the publish and subscribe architecture. Joe Walker recently discussed three major API styles for Comet: traditional, message-passing, and data synchronization. These API styles correlate to these three architectural styles, respectively: RPC, pub/sub, and REST.

Dave Crane says you usually don’t have to look far to find a place where Comet helps. He also talks about the rapid development of Comet, how he discovered Comet, and using Comet alongside a traditional domain model.

Michael Carter says that his concerns about the Bayeux protocol have gone unanswered, and that Greg Wilkins’ and Alex Russell’s arguments for Bayeux have focused on peripheral issues.

Alex Russell, one of the writers of the Bayeux protocol, says that Michael’s complaints are fundamentally flawed.

There are 3 styles of API that are relevant when considering Comet services. There are pros and cons to all these API styles. I’m going to compare them with notes as to how they are supported in DWR. On the DWR project, we don’t believe that there is a ‘right’ answer to the question ‘which of these alternatives is best’, so we are extending our support for all of them.

I had a chance to sit down and talk with Ric Smith of Kaazing and chat about their Comet implementation, with mentions of Bayeux, server sent events, and the current and future state of Comet.
